Leaving behind the history and the “grand tour” where the childrens of rich families went to fill themselves up of the cultures of different countries especially France and Italy; today are the cities itself the ones which have, not only attract the visitors, they also have to fulfill its practical and a sort of charming role for its inhabitants that make them fell like part of it.
In order to sell a city image it can’t be look as the same of a simple consumer product, although it is true that the cities are in fact involved in the global imaginary in a limited number of images produced for it which are captured and used in postal’s cards and others different touristic promotion media, these images are only a minimal part of the city image and are more a consequence than a cause or origin. The real engine that moves the city, which establish the particular base and is at the same time a reflection of the local culture mixed with a global one is its URBAN GRID.
The urban grid is the one which establish the possibilities and the degree of the encounter between its different agents, it’s also the one which allows to generate certain perspectives when it is use that kept printed in people’s eyes, and at the same time its continuum path inside the urban grid is the one that at the end sustain and mould the city image.
The urban grid generates and adopts particular physical characteristics inside the city, it gives a personality based in the spatial configuration, and this is its topology.
City topology is the base to understand and to work with the urban grid, molding to its geographical characteristics of its emplacement.
So when we visit a city or live in one, what do whe see and fell when we are outside in its streets? Buildings? people? stores? The size and forms of the diferents paths? Its squares? Or maybe something else?
